30th January to 3rd February

In English this week, we have continued our work on The Highwayman, taking a range of different approaches to it. We have tracked the poet's use of colour though the poem, discussed a video interpretation, done a "hot-seating" exercise and started writing a monologue from the point of view of one of the main characters. In addition, we have done some comprehension work on some other poems.

Our maths has concentrated on fractions. We have been converting fractions to different denominators and comparing fractions, showing which is the largest by drawing diagrams and by explaining by finding and using equivalent fractions. Later on in the week we learned and practiced converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions.

Our geography and science topics relate to the theme of water. We have revised our understanding of the water cycle and the role of heating and cooling in this. We have learned more about planning fair tests and, after this, we planned experiments of our own to find out which factors affect the speed with which materials will dissolve in water.
