14th to 18th December
We have had a busy but enjoyable final week of term.
The main work has been to finish off our weaving project. We completed our woven panels and, after cutting them off our weaving frames and tying off the ends, we used them to make Christmas cards for our families. After that, we used a digital camera to photograph our cards and make a record of the product we had created. Then we completed an evaluation sheet to note the strengths and weaknesses of our bodkin designs to finish a very enjoyable project.
In maths we have checked up on some of the maths that we have been doing this term and have also done a review test to discover any areas which need further work. We have also done some other seasonal crafts and had our Christmas party with the other Year 5 and 6 classes.
We are now on our school Christmas holidays and school reopens in the new year on Tuesday 5th January.

7th to 11th December
This has been our Christmas concert week and we had good performances on Monday afternoon and on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, presenting Christmas Around the World with the other Year 5 and 6 classes.
In our English work, we have continued our instruction writing. We have written instructions about how to make a jam sandwich and another set, to fit in with our Design Technology work, describing how to make a weaving frame. We made sure that we used good connectives and included a range of different sentences in our introductory paragraphs.
Our maths has involved work on time (including the 24 hour clock) and, today, coordinates.
In addition to French (Tuesday) and PE (Tuesday and Thursday) we have also spent some time every day on our weaving and some of us have now finished our first woven panels. We plan to make these into Christmas cards next week.

2nd to 4th December
On Wednesday, we had a special geography day with as series of different geography lessons. We learned about 6-figure grid references on maps and we did some research about Christmas celebrations in different countries of the world. We have also had a session of orienteering. We did one activity indoors which involved orienting a map and finding a series of different locations as fast as possible. Then we learned how to use a compass to work out directions. After this, we tried following directions from one place to another and had to try to reach the correct final destination.
Our English and maths work has been quite varied, with a little report writing as well as story writing in English and work on calculations and perimeters in maths. We have made more headway with our weaving and begun the design process for making additional bodkins for our work. We have done this by first analysing the bodkins school had purchased, identifying their key features. Then we thought about what we could use to make our bodkins from and did some drawings to show some different design ideas.

30th November to 1st December
In maths we have started a new and varied unit. Our work today and yesterday has involved work on measurement (measuring in millimetres) and calculations (including multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000).
We have spent quite some time on our weaving technology project, threading up our weaving frame and designing our woven panels. We used squared paper to do this and found that it is quite a challenge to create a design with no curves.
We had a practice for our Christmas concert yesterday and also did some science in which we were thinking about the differences between solids, liquids and gases and discussed the properties of these states of materials.
Today we also had our usual Tuesday sessions of French and PE.
