24th to 28th April
In English, this week, we have started to think again about writing well-structured stories. Our focus is in developing both our characters and the setting in the different parts of the story. We began by studying a short story and identifying all the places where the author developed the setting by telling the reader more detail about it or showed the impact of it on the characters. This helped us to become aware of how an author will build-up the reader's impression of setting throughout a story, not just at one point. We did a similar exercise with a character. After this, we started to write our own stories, with a simple "lost and found" plot, in which we are trying to develop both setting and character.
Our maths activities have further developed our understanding of decimal numbers and we have also moved on to more work on addition and subtraction. These activities have helped us think about when it is sensible to use mental methods and when to use written methods of calculation.
We spent some time on our history work this week, After learning more about the role of merchant traders in later Saxon times, we thought about their impact on an area when they visited only one of several villages in an area. Using this knowledge, we were able to write explanations of why Nottingham was the settlement in our area which grew into a town, rather than staying a village.
In addition to this, we had two sessions of PE, started some ICT work on 3D graphics and learned some more about cam mechanisms in technology.

18th to 21st April
In this first, short, week of term we have concentrated on some grammar work in our English. We did some activities about adjectives intended to help encourage use of a wider range of types of adjective in descriptive sections of written work. (That is to broaden the focus from obvious features of objects such as colour and size.)
Our maths has mainly been about decimal fractions. We have tried activities to develop understanding of place value of decimals (tenths, hundredths and thousandths), compared and ordered them. We have also done some number-line activities.
We did some practical work in science, using filter paper and filter funnels to separate tea from salt after mixing the mixture in water and, in history, started to think about the impact of merchant traders on the development of towns in later Saxon England. This afternoon, we began our Design and Technology project on Automata by looking at films of some automata and discussing them before drawing some examples, labeling components, describing movement and writing evaluations.
