9th - 13th February
In this last week before our half-term holiday, we have been finishing off some our our units of work. We thought more deeply about the characters in The Highwayman poem, hot-seating some of the main characters before writing monologues in role as either the highwayman or Bess. We also completed our report on the life of a river.
In computing, we did some more progamming work and spent some time on science activities, tracking the temperature as water was heated to boiling point and condensing water on a cold metal tray, creating a simple model of the water cycle.
Another significant piece of work completed this week was some history work based around Nottingham Castle. We studied a series of line-drawings showing the development of the castle and connected these to pieces of information about the building from its initial construction in 1067/68 to the 15th century. We learned that Richard III spent almost half his rein based in Nottingham and we watched the fascinating documentary (The King in the Car Park), making notes about the evidence which convinced scientists and historians that the skeleton discovered by archaeologists was the remains of Richard.

2nd - 6th February
In maths we have been practising mental methods of addition and subtraction, including adding a series of numbers mentally and also interpreting number sentences which include brackets to control the order of operations.
Our work on The Highwayman has involved investigating the meaning of some of the vocabulary used in the poem and thinking about the poetic features introduced by Alfred Noyes. We also tracked the involvement of each of the main characters through the story and discussed a video interpretation. The focus for our comprehension activities this week was making inferences about the characters actions and motives. This week we also did a reading test.
On Monday afternoon we started our Aboriginal stick paintings. This was a time consuming activity and required another extended session on Friday before most of us had finished.
