6th - 24th March
One of the highlights of the past couple of weeks was our visit to Southwell Minister, time travelling. We joined over 300 pupils from other primary school at the Minster that day and enjoyed six, varied activities which involved us learning about the Minster building (including the architecture and the stained glass), activities that go on in the building (including prayer and communion) and charitable work (such as The Children's Society and Fairtrade).
In English, we have written a series of non-chronological reports. Latterly, we have been writing about the life cycles of different types of animals; frog (amphibian), peregrine falcon (bird) and butterfly (insect). This work links with our science curriculum for Year 5 and the English focus has been on the structure of our writing and on the editing skills.
Our maths has covered a number of areas. These have including finding fractions and percentages of amounts (including money and lengths), reflecting and translating shapes, properties of 3D shapes and negative numbers.
In history, we have learned about the Anglo-Saxon tribes that migrated to this country, thinking about the reasons why they came and the areas that the different tribes largely settled/ We have also considered how the general pattern of larger and larger kingdoms developed, including the Heptarchy.
We have completed our "bodkins" work in Design and Technology, which relates to our weaving work from last term. Having designed our own bodkins, we tested and evaluated them. After making improvements we tested them again to help us understand the iterative nature of the design process.

27th February to 3rd March
In maths this week, we have continued our work on fractions, decimals and percentages, relating these to each other and converting between them. We have found fractions and percentages of quantities and, at the end of the week, moved on to a new unit of work about number. Today we thought about properties of square numbers.
We have done a series of different things in English this week including our Monday comprehension activity, improving our report about the life-cycle of the frog and bringing our "Highwayman" monologues to presentation standard. We finished the week by making notes about the life cycle of birds using videos of the peregrine falcons which nest on the Nottingham Trent University buildings.
We had a science afternoon on Wednesday when we thought about the properties of materials, focusing on their thermal properties. We investigated the effect of different types of cups and different insulating materials on the speed with which the temperature of hot water drops.
We also had PE, a session of Spanish, finished off our "stick-paintings" and tried some Lego design challenges.
