We did some more fractions work and did our tables test in maths.

The highlight of the day was our drama lesson where we prepared short dramatic presentations of well-known fables and then presented them to the whole class. These were really good.

Don't forget that tomorrow (Friday 1st October) is an INSET day.

We wrote up our fables in English, after marking them against a checklist of important features and making some improvements. We did some work for our class and year group displays and practised for our harvest service presentation.

In maths we tried began to change improper fractions into mixed numbers after trying some more activities involving converting mixed numbers into improper fractions.

We continued with our work on fractions today, beginning to change mixed numbers to improper fractions. In English, we listened to some more fables and began writing our own fable after listing some key features of these traditional stories.

This afternoon we had PE, Spanish and did some handwriting practice.

We began our new maths unit on fractions today thinking about terms such as numerator, denominator, proper fraction, improper fraction and mixed number.

In English we made brief notes on the main points of a fable and used these to make oral re-tellings of the story.

We did some music (our cyclical rhythms topic), some science thinking about seed dispersal and began to practice our harvest service presentation.

We completed our maths work on division and almost all the group succeeded in achieving the key objective for our year group.

In English, we analysed the structure of traditional fables and re-wrote the beginning of a fable, either in the style of a series of diary entries or by trying to include lots of description or dialogue. The idea of this was to build upon the work we did in English last week.

We began our Geography topic on the Lake District by thinking about different types of park. We are familiar with local parks (like Digby and Valley Road Park) and country parks (like Wollaton and Rufford). We thought about the features of these types of parks before introducing the idea of national parks to help us understand the scale of the Lake District.

On Friday afternoon we had our photographs taken and we did some science work and art for our Harvest Service display board.

In English we discussed fables and studied one using a "cloze" exercise.

In maths today, we extended our work on division and also did some calculator work.
(We also had a power cut!)

In science we began thinking about the life cycle of plants, sequencing pictures and text to describe the life cycle of a poppy.

In maths we revised some multiplication from last week and did some metal maths before continuing with our division work.

We did some written comprehension in English, based on the story, The Shrinking of Treehorn. The focus of the work was to write answers including plenty of detail by refering closely to the text.

This afternoon we had PE (tennis with YMCA), Spanish and handwriting activities.

Made a good start to our maths work on division this week.

We had another good session creating, modifying and grouping graphic objects, this time to make repeated patterns for wrapping paper with a "space" theme.

In history we completed our work on the ancient Greek agora and we finished the day looking at fruits in science using microscopes and hand lenses.

At the end of this maths unit almost everyone had achieved the multiplication element
of the key objective we have been working at.

We spent some more time finishing our story starters and I will mark those this weekend.

In art and design we tried some sculpture! We used K'NEX to create some segmented alien
beings! These had a head element, a tail element and a series of at least five identical segments.
(Then we took some photographs of our efforts!)

The highlight of the day today was a little expedition to Digby Park
and around school collecting fruits as a way to begin our science
work on the life cycle of plants.

We observed and sketched them today and will then think about how
they would be dispersed naturally before opening them up to find the seeds.

Continued our work on multiplication and story openings.

In history, we studied the ancient Greek agora and began
considering whether it was similar to modern markets
such as that in the Victoria Centre in Nottingham.

Continued our maths work on written multiplication sums
and began some English on writing the beginning of stories.
We are experimenting with writing the start to a story in three ways:
- with action;
- with dialogue;
- with description.
There was some super work.

In the afternoon we had PE, Spanish and some time for handwriting practice.

Today we began looking at a written (column) method for doing multiplication sums.
This seemed to go well.

We had our first ICT lesson of the year in the computer room.
Just about all the children successfully managed to:
- create a a series of shapes
- change the fill colour
- resize the shapes
- move the shapes
- group the shapes

In history we began studying the ancient Greek polis!
We were thinking about what made up a polis - the main features.

We finished off with a detective story - one with a puzzle for us to solve.

This week we have continued our English work thinking about how authors create and develop characters in their stories. We are now studying The Hooligan's Shampoo and exploring the characters of Dillon, Grandpa and the Hooligan.
