Our maths this week has been related to using and understanding percentages and relating percentages to fractions and decimals. We have also revised converting fractions to different denominators and learned and practiced simplifying fractions. We have continued our thinking about non-chronological reports in our English work. We made notes from a discussion about the life cycle of a frog and identified the main stages which could then become separate paragraphs in our report. Then we thought about the organisation of a full non-chronological report and wrote the opening and main paragraphs. In science, we thought about the properties of materials. We learned about scientific definitions of solid, liquid and gas, comparing these to the ideas we already had ourselves before thinking of typical examples and less typical examples of each. We also had a special history activity on Thursday. Using our knowledge of Saxon life-style, we had a "village" discussion about the problem that there was land hunger in northern Germany, homeland to the Saxon people. We talked about the various ways we could obtain more food and have a better life. Having agreed, as many families did, to seek a new place to live, we made a series of decisions which led a groups to explore a new land to the east in search of a perfect place for a new settlement. In groups, we explored a new area (using information about the landscape, vegetation and the soil type) and every single group ended up selecting a site which was, in fact, settled by historical Saxon groups. In addition, we had a session of RE about Gandhi, two PE sessions, a further go at drawing using one-point perspective and made some bodkin designs after examining existing products and thinking about their key features.
