30th November to 11th December 2015
We have had a very busy two weeks at school and in class.
We have been working hard to prepare and present our Years 5 & 6 Christmas production, Angels' Delight, which had its last performance yesterday evening. Everyone sang really well and the acting was impressive too.
Last week was also "end-of-term" test week for us. We did short tests in English and maths and, this week, we did an end-of-unit science test.
In English lessons, we continued with our "Mr. Men" story writing, finishing our "climax and resolution" episode and making progress typing this up after improving it. We have also created some more illustrations for the episodes we have written to date. Alongside this work, we have have been developing our instruction writing. Building on last year's learning (about the use of imperative verbs and sequence connectives), we are focussing on creating helpful and/or persuasive and engaging introductions and endings in which we show an ability to use different sentence structures.
Our maths has been concentrating on calculations. This work has included trying long multiplication and solving word problems which require several calculations to complete.
In science, we thought about air resistance (and water resistance) as special examples of friction. We have also made good progress with our RE topic on Religious Beliefs reflected in Art. We studied three very different paintings of the annunciation, discussing these and reflecting on the meanings that the artists are portraying. We also thought and wrote about the symbolism of the Christingle. Having heard the story celebrated by Jewish people in the festival of Hanukkah, we looked at images of menorahs before designing menorahs of our own which would be appealing to a Jewish family.
We have also being working hard on our weaving. In connection with this topic, we have designed our own bodkins to use for weaving. Most of the class have made, tested, improved and re-tested bodkins of their own.
