Following the half-term holiday, we started  a new unit of work in English. This is based on short-story writing. We have read some short-stories together with the focus on thinking about how the author has developed the plot, the characters and used the setting. We have analysed the structure of the stories, trying to identify sections which we have called opening, build-up, climax/dilemma, resolution and ending. We have tried writing opening paragraphs for stories in different ways (action openings, descriptive openings, action openings and rhetorical questions) and then started to write a complete short story using the opening, build-up, climax/dilemma, resolution and ending structure.

In maths we have covered a range of areas including doing more complex multiplication calculations mentally (by combining our times tables knowledge with our understanding of place value), work on visualising 3D shapes, nets and the mathematical language useful in describing the properties of 2D shapes. We finished this week by thinking about factors, multiples and prime numbers.

Our attention in history turned to the question of why the settlement of Snotengaham was the village in this area which was the one to develop into the town. We considered the geography of the locality and the impact of this on the decision of early merchant traders to visit the market here and the consequences of this.

We have made a start on our Design and Technology topic for the half term, which is weaving. We have measured, sawn and sanded the wood for our weaving frames and glued these together.

Last Tuesday, we had a special morning when we were thinking about World War I as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of this conflict. We used the internet to research answers to questions we thought to to help build our historical knowledge and used Google Docs to work with partners to record this.
