8th to 12th September 2014
We have had a good first week of the school year.
In English, we have studied the characters and how someone's actions show their mood and personality the the story Dinner Ladies Don't Count by Bernard Ashley. We have done some fiction and some non-fiction writing arising out of the plot of this story and we have also begun a short unit of work based on the Philip Ridley story The Hooligan's Shampoo.
Our maths has focused on revising arithmetic methods, making sure that we have remembered these processes after the long holiday. After finishing that, we moved on to our first main maths unit which is about place value and decimal numbers. Our activities have included ordering and partitioning numbers and thinking about the value of digits in numbers.
In addition to our Tuesday PE session and Spanish lesson, our main "topic" for the week has been based around the idea of survival on a desert island. We have thought about what we would need to stay alive and how we could ensure we had water, food and warmth by finding appropriate sources on the island. We finished the week by making shelters out of fallen tree branches, twigs, leaves, moss and other found materials. In addition, we had our first lesson on the ukulele and started thinking about our targets and class agreement.
