We have concluded our thinking about myths and legends in English by writing our own "legend" in the style of an episode of the Odyssey. We first created a monster, describing its behaviour as well as its appearance and then developed a hero - including thinking about how he (or she) might overcome and defeat the monster. Then we wrote our stories, trying to include episodes writing from the hero's point of view.

Another unit of work we concluded this week was our design technology topic about structures and bridges. For the final task, we worked in groups to build a bridge platform using thin card, A4 paper and PVA glue. All the groups used the paper to make supporting beams (circular or triangular in cross-section, following our earlier learning) in one or more layers. Later in the week, we tested these to destruction. We first weighed the structures then added weights to the bridge as it spanned the designated 45 cm gap. This allowed us to find the structure which could bear the heaviest load and also calculate which group's bridge had the highest strength to weight ratio.

In maths this week we have been learning how to measure angles accurately with a protractor and some of us went on to consider angles on a straight line and we have also been calculating areas of rectangles. We have also spent some time finishing off the scrapbooks about our Southwell Minster visit and exploring the possibilities and features of a vector graphics application.

We enjoyed watching the Y3/4 production of Jack and the Beanstalk on Wednesday morning and today we had a special day making a board game based on The Odyssey in which the chance cards reflected elements from the story that we had finished reading and watching earlier in the week.
