22nd to 25th April
In this short week (which began with a bank holiday) we have started a new unit of work in English. This is about persuasive writing. This week our focus has been on advertisements. We have looked at the use of fact and opinion in adverts and practised distinguishing fact from opinion in descriptions. We have also learned about some of the techniques used in writing adverts (including the use of ambiguity, hyperbole, statistics, repetition and emotive language) and created an advert of our own.
In maths, we have being revising and developing our understanding of number, thinking about ordering and rounding large numbers (into the hundreds of thousands) as well as numbers with up to two decimal places. Today we also did some maths problems which involved more than one calculation to find the answer.
We have made good progress in our learning about life in ancient Greece, finding out about the lives of men and women in that civilisation. A key part of our activities has been to use evidence from ancient Greek vase paintings to describe and explain how the people in those day bought shoes to fit them and how they harvested the olives. We also compared the lifestyle of the wives of rich men in ancient Greece with the lifestyle of the wives of poor men in that time.
Today we started our art topic for this term. This has the title "containers" and we began by studying images of a wide variety of different containers before focussing on the work of some different potters. For the different containers, we thought about their age and the period of history they would have been created, the place they may have been made and the materials used. We also identified the characteristics of different designers by spotting pieces made by the same artist and then drew and annotated some pieces created by Bodal Manz, a Danish artist who produces pieces made from porcelain.
