6th to 10th January

With the start of the new term, we began a new unit of learning in English. This is focusing on explanation writing. We began my scrutinizing a good explanation text and identifying the important and distinctive text and language features of it. We then repeated this exercise with a new text in order to make comparison. We did some work on the kinds of connectives and connective phrases commonly employed in explanation texts and the started to write an explanation of how ox-bow lakes are formed (linking with our geography topic on Rivers).

In maths, our learning has been to practice and develop fluency with mental addition and subtraction (using pairs of two-digit numbers) and harder written subtraction sums. We have also revised, again, place value work multiplying and dividing numbers (including decimal numbers) by 10, 100 and 1000.

We have completed our RE topic on Faith, Symbolism and the Arts (by finding the meanings of some Hindu symbols and using these to help us create pictures of the Ganesha) and we started a science topic on light by thinking about how we see objects.

We finished the week with some painting as we experimented with the effects we could obtain using a chisel brush in art.
