27th to 31st January
We have started new units of work in both English and Maths this week.
In English, we have begun a study of the narrative poem The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We have read the poem and listened to it in several forms (including hearing it ready by the author and presented in the form of a song), thought about the features of a poem and used dictionaries to find the meaning of some of the vocabulary the poet used. We have also started to write a "wanted poster" for the Highwayman. While we have been doing this, we have also kept on with our Mr. Men stories, some of which are now very close to completion.
At the start of the week, our maths focus was probability - the language of probability and likelihood and probability experiments. Now we have moved on to work on calculations and place value, in which we have been doing activities which relied on our knowledge of number bonds and place value (e.g. 0.004 + 0.008). We have also been thinking about making generalisations/creating rules in maths and have done this in relation to odd and even numbers.
We had a special science activity on Wednesday when the "star dome" came to visit our school. This was like a huge dome tent which worked rather like a planetarium. We looked at the movement of stars in the sky and learned something about some constellations.
Another major piece of work this week was the next element of our art topic. We learned about some styles of Australian Aboriginal art and the pallet these artists used. Then we found out about their stick painting work and the symbolism employed in their paintings before having a go at using these symbols in our own stick paintings representing a journey.
