13th - 17th January
We have continued with our English unit of work about explanation writing this week. We have written some fictional accident reports giving accounts of cause and effect (e.g Jack and Jill hurting their heads; Humpty falling from the wall) of the accidents and have written an explanation of the importance of cleaning your teeth. We have also used explanations in our history work this week as we have begun to consider why some villages grew to become towns in Saxon times.
Our main maths work this week has been concerned data handling and drawing and interpreting different kinds of graphs in particular.We have drawn and compared bar charts, bar line graphs and line graphs, thinking about the correct usage of the different types of graphical presentation. We have also done further work on mental subtraction of two digit numbers and multiplication and division of decimal numbers.
On Wednesday we had a special science day in Year 5. We spent the morning researching facts and figures about our solar system and thinking about how to present these. In the afternoon we did a Crime Scene Investigation simulation. We had too analyse five white powders found at a crime scene and at suspects houses. (We did this by examining the substances and also by observing their reaction in water and weak acid.) We also did some chromatography to match ink found at the scene with pens found at suspects' homes.
We also had our weekly PE sessions, our Spanish lesson and finished the week with another painting activity.
