15th - 26th April
We have had a good start to the summer term.
In English, we completed our work on play-scripts and began a new unit about persuasive writing. So far, we have concentrated on persuasive techniques used in advertising. We have looked at the use of opinion alongside facts, exaggeration/hyperbole and half-truth and how rhetorical questions, repetition, statistics and alliteration can be used. We studied adverts from newspapers and magazines and wrote our own examples using the techniques we had discussed.
In maths, our main work this week has been about multiplication and division - practicing and extending abilities to do mental and written calculations.
We have continued our history study of life in ancient Greek. We have thought about the lives of the men, particularly their working lives, using vase paintings to find out about how some of the work of craftsmen was carried out. We have now begun to learn about the lives of children in those days, comparing the different upbringing of the boys and the girls.
Our new geography topic is the study of an area in the UK that is different to our own. We will be learning about the Lake District. This is a National Park and we have begun by thinking about parks - local parks, country parks and National Parks - to help us begin to develop an idea of the concept of "scale" in geography. We have also used pictures to help us picture the area and list the main landscape features of the Lake District.
We have explored some new water-colour techniques in art by learning to use a chisel brush. We have practiced a variety of brush strokes to create different marks on paper and then used these to try to build up compositions showing plants and flowers.
