29th October to 2nd November

In our first week after half-term, we started a new unit of work in English, thinking about instruction writing. We briefly considered sequence connectives and imperative verbs and have then made creating a whole instruction text (with introduction, tips or safety advice and a persuasive element) the main focus of our learning.

In maths, our work has been about shape. We have thought about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, classifying shapes using Carroll and Venn diagrams and investigating some of the properties such as number of diagonals.

We had a science afternoon on Wednesday, when we thought about air. We investigated the amount of air in a litre of sand and a litre of gravel and found a way to determine if air has a weight.

This week, we also began our main Design Technology project for the term. This is making a weaving frame and bodkins so that we can make a woven panel for a card (such as a Christmas card). We started by measuring and sawing the main lengths of wood for the weaving frames, cutting out the card corners and beginning to think about the designs for our woven pictures.

Today we finished the week by having our first session learning the songs for our Christmas concert.
