31st January to 4th February

We have had a mixture of activities in both our English and our maths work this week.

We have watched a DVD of three short episodes of The Odyssey and written some more descriptive paragraphs about the monsters and mythical beasts in these stories. In addition we have spent some time revising and practicing our punctuation, including the punctuation of speech. We have also done an advanced comprehension exercise on a short story, thinking about characters' motives, feelings and reactions.

In maths, we have been doing some work on maths problems, focusing on problems which need more than one calculation to find the answer. In addition to this, we have spent a lot of time on mental maths this week. This has revised doubling and halving of decimal numbers and practicing calculating complements to 100 and 1000.

We have had PE lessons as well as music and ICT this week and, on Wednesday afternoon, we did a full science investigation. The task was to find out which, of a selection of materials, was the best choice to use for a reflective strip on cyclists' clothing. Each group planned their own experiment, identifying the variables that needed to be kept the same from test to test, and used light meters to measure the light reflected from the different materials. Later in the week we wrote up this experiment as a formal science report.
