4th to 8th October
Our main maths work this week has been all about data handling. One of the important ideas has been to understand and use the idea of the mode of a set of data. We have also learned how to draw and interpret bar line graphs. we have compared these with pictograms and bar charts and considered most suitable uses of these different ways to present data. In English we have moved on to writing non-fiction paragraphs. We have been concentrating on organisation of the paragraphs and including sentences with a range of structures so the paragraph is interesting to read. We have written about some of the important rivers of the world and used our success criteria self-assessment sheets to check and improve our work.
We spent some time practicing our harvest presentation which we gave on Thursday as part of our school Harvest Festival service. All the children were involved and our Year 5 part was all about the way we harvest coal and oil and protect the environment. On Thursday we also had a special PE activity when we were visited by a professional athlete for a fund-raising fitness training session. This extra PE was in addition to our hockey work on Tuesday and our Thursday gymnastics.
In addition this week, we did some science research about the solar system, watched a DVD about the course of a river (the rest of the programme we saw last week), had a short session with the ukuleles, read two more chapters of our class novel, The Iron Man, and did some painting.
