19th to 23rd April
We have been continuing our units of work in English, maths and history.
In English, we have read further chapters of Grandpa Chatterji - focusing on part of the story where he visits a fair. We have been thinking about the cultural differences highlighted by the story and we have also been exploring how the author develops a character. We have done this by studying the character of Grandpa Leicester in this story and the way this character is presented by the author before and after he meets Grandpa Chatterji.
Our maths has helped us practice and improve our calculations skills and, towards the end of the week, we moved on to think about measuring angles using a protractor. We used a computer program on the whiteboard to practice estimating the size of angles and naming them (acute, right-angle, obtuse, straight-angle). We also tried drawing some angles.
The life and roles of women in ancient Greece has been the focus of our history work this week. We used text (from Xenophon) and pictures from vase paintings to identify aspects of their daily life and the different processes involved in cloth making. Then we compared the lives of women married to rich men with those married to poor men in ancient Athens. Surprisingly, perhaps, many of us would have preferred to have the lives of the poorer women to those of the richer ones when we have considered the ways they spent their days.
We have had two PE sessions (taking advantage of the improved weather to do PE outdoors) and begun a new unit of work in music.
