Our geography work has linked closely with our literacy over the last couple of days as we have been preparing and presenting arguments about planning proposals. Yesterday we had a pretend Lake District Authority planning meeting in which some of us took the role of hoteliers seeking permission to build a lake-side watersports centre. Others had the roles of local residents, shopkeepers, hill farmers or holiday reps (either activity holidays for young people or holidays for the elderly). After the hoteliers described their plans, everyone else said how their group felt about them and asked questions. In the end, despite a compromise proposal from the hoteliers, the plans were rejected by a large majority. This was a very enjoyable exercise and many thoughtful and challenging comments were made. Today we thought about the responses of different groups to the plans for a supermarket to be built on our school field.

In maths, we have been working on fractions. We have been trying some quite difficult work, involving mixed numbers, improper fractions and finding intermediate fractions as well as placing fractions with different denominators on a number-line and finding fractions of numbers.

We have also spent some time on science, yesterday evaporating the water from a salt solution to leave the salt crystals and condensing some of the water vapour/steam on a cold tray to recover some of the water. Today we did some more practical work on separating materials from mixtures.

Tomorrow, many of us are off on a residential activity weekend.
