31st October - 1st November

We have begun the new half-term by starting an important new English unit. This is about story writing, in which we are learning how to create a well-structured narrative. On Monday we looked at an example of an opening to a short story and then wrote our own openings. After discussing these we had a second attempt to improve our efforts. Today we studied an example of the "build-up" of a story which introduces a dilemma for the characters. Then, again, we had a go at writing our own "build-ups".

In maths we have learned how to read and plot coordinates in all four quadrants (that is, including coordinates with negative values). Today in maths we looked at some problems involving "measures". To solve these, we had to decide what kind of calculations to do and then show the working out. We also had to convert the units before we could do the calculations correctly.

We did some spreadsheet work in ICT, revising what we learned last year and then went on to use the spreadsheet to create graphs of weather data from two locations in Snowdonia. We have also had our PE session with the YMCA today after our French and handwriting lessons.
