21st January

Today we showed our textiles art work to the whole school in assembly and finished off our evaluation of this topic.

The major activity of the day was a special event to conclude our geography topic on the Lake District. This took the form of a Lake District Planning Authority meeting. Everyone received an invitation to attend this meeting which was called to discuss a proposed development by the owners of Lakeview Hotel. When they arrived (bringing the map and estate agent's details which had been sent with the invitation) the children were welcomed and, as the meeting was introduced, they realised that they would be taking on the roles of hotel owners, farmers, local residents and shopkeepers or organisers of holidays (for the young or the elderly). After a short preparation time, the hoteliers agrued the case for their development - the provision of a watersports centre by the lake - and the other groups voiced their objections or support. After questions, discussion and consessions by various groups, a compromise was reached to satisfy everyone - well, nearly everyone! This was an excellent session - well worth the time. A brief report was written to record the discussions and the outcome.
