19th January
After spending some time thinking about the organisation and structure of The Highwayman and identifying the rhyme patterns in the poem, the children wrote a "Wanted" poster for the main character using information from the text of the poem. In maths we did some more work on different mental strategies (e.g. doubling/halving; inverse operations; multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, 1000) to help solve harder multiplication sums "in you head". (This was hard.) Then we did some written multiplication calculations.
This afternoon we focused on history. We worked out our own name - as they would have been if they had been created by the rules that applied in ancient Athens, then we searched for information and wrote an answer to the question: Do you think boys or girls had a happier life in ancient Greece?
Most of the class also had time to do some geography work for our topic In the News, giving them the chance to practice their atlas skills.
